A Nation’s Tense Debate Over How to Fight Rape, in NPR

In February, 2019, Sierra Leone’s president, Julius Maada Bio, declared rape a national emergency, pledging services and funds to sexual violence survivors and a change in the country’s laws. In June, he lifted the emergency with no public explanation. Advocates for sexual violence survivors are left wondering what’s next. Mixed messages from the country’s leadership has sparked a national conversation about the way women are treated, from the streets to the courtrooms.
