Boom and Bust: How Sierra Leone lost faith in global aid, in The Dial

There's been a lot of attention recently on what the end of USAID means for countries around the world. What's often missing is a long-term, historic view of how this gutting fits into ebbs and flows of aid more generally, and how recipients of aid navigate this unstable territory. In this reported essay for The Dial, one of my favorite new publications, I reflect on my own role in this turbulence, how such instability impacts policy making and programs, and what it means for government staffers tasked with negotiating with global aid funders.
