In April, 2020, Dr. Matt Willis, Marin County’s Public Health Officer, came down with the very disease he was fighting. As the county’s hospitals filled up with COVID patients, Dr. Willis tested positive himself, disclosing his diagnosis on YouTube. He used the opportunity to reflect on what the county could do to better support patients infected with Covid-19 and limit the financial strain their families faced. He spoke openly to me about his dual experience as a patient and administrator in an interview for The New York Times’ California Today newsletter.
